Getting Started with WordPress

Once you log in to WordPress it should seem very familiar to you. The control panel is very similar to the wordpress.com, free blogging site, control panel. This is because they are both built on the free WordPress framework.

Install WordPress

Web Hosting for Students (WH4S)

Your WordPress installation needs to be on your main website. Your URL should look something like www.myexampleportfolio.com. It should not be a subdomain like portfolio.myexamplesite.com. One-click WordPress installation should be a feature of your hosting service. Each host will be slightly different. Above is a video tutorial on how to install a WordPress site through Web Hosting for Students and BlueHost.com. If you don’t have either of these hosts, a simple google/youtube search should bring promising results on how to install WordPress. You may also find tutorials on your respective hosting companies website.

Logging Into Your Website

This video will show you how to log into your WordPress website using www.yoursitename.com/wp-admin. You setup the username and password when you installed WordPress. This is not the username and password from your wordpress.COM account.

Updating WordPress

The first thing you will want to do is make sure your WordPress is up-to-date. Your WordPress might already be updated. If so, you will see the following message, “You have the latest version of WordPress.” If not, this video will show you where to find the available updates.

Remove Default Plugins

Your host sometimes automatically installs some plugins in our WordPress. We are going to go in and delete these plugins since we will not be using them.

Remove “Coming Soon” screen

This video is only needed if you are using Bluehost instead of Web Hosting for Students. It will show you how to remove the “Coming Soon” page for when visitors go to your homepage. This page only shows when you are not logged in.
